OLDOINYO LENGAI

OVERVIEW

Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active volcano that towers above the Rift Valley near Lake Natron. Rising to 2,962 meters (9,718 ft), it is the only volcano in the world that erupts carbonatite lava, a rare, low-temperature lava that creates dramatic landscapes and unusual formations.

This challenging overnight trek begins from Ngaresero village near Lake Natron. The climb starts just after midnight to avoid the intense daytime heat, with hikers reaching the summit at sunrise for breathtaking views of the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and distant peaks like Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro on clear days.

The itinerary also includes time to relax at Lake Natron, known for its flamingos, waterfalls, and stark volcanic scenery, making it a perfect combination of cultural, geological, and adventure travel.

What makes our Mt.oldoinyo lengai trek stand out

    • The Only Active Carbonatite Volcano in the World – Unlike other volcanoes, Lengai erupts rare sodium carbonate lava, cooler and faster-flowing than typical basaltic lava.

    • Cultural Significance – Revered as the "Mountain of God" by the Maasai, making the climb a spiritual and cultural experience.

    • Night Ascent Experience – Most treks start around midnight, so trekkers summit at sunrise and witness breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley bathed in morning light.

    • Unmatched Views – Panoramic sights of Lake Natron, Serengeti plains, and distant volcanic peaks like Mt. Meru and Kilimanjaro.

    • Wild, Untouched Landscape – Less crowded compared to Kilimanjaro or Meru, giving trekkers a raw and authentic adventure.

    • Dramatic Crater Views – A chance to stand on the rim of an active volcano and look directly into its smoking crater.

    • Expert Local Guides – Deep knowledge of both the geology and Maasai cultural significance of the mountain.

    • Tailored Experience – Options for combining the trek with Lake Natron explorations, flamingo sightings, or Maasai cultural visits.
